Welcome to the Library

Who: Open Post
What: Opening Post
Where: All over the library and its grounds
Warnings: [to be edited if necessary]

Today the Great Library opens its doors to all Patrons, who have come from many of the stories and books all available on the shelves.

For this first visit, Patrons will be restricted to the Library and its grounds.

Fortunate, then, that these are impressive indeed - large gardens set up for all sorts of activities, woods surrounding the area and in the Library itself? Cafes, internet access, and the best weapons in the universe: books.

Do enjoy your first visit to the Library, Patron, and always remember the rules.

The Rules of the Library
1. Patrons cannot read further ahead in their own stories than the time they have arrived from. Any attempt to do so will result in being met with blank pages. This lack of information will also occur if trying to find out spoilers online.

2. Patrons cannot tell other Patrons how their story ends. Any attempt to do so will find the Patron unable to find the words to explain it.

3. All books must be shelved correctly.

4. Do Not Harm the Books

5. Do not interfere with the nature of Narrative Causality

The Artful Dodger | Oliver Twist

[personal profile] knowntohisfriends 2018-05-07 10:23 am (UTC)(link)
[The Dodger would not freely admit that he was not exactly the best in the world when it came to the reading and the writing. In fact, he could do neither though he could recognize his own name when written down and a few important words. Enough to get people to stop asking any sort of questions, at least. Still, that did not stop him from looking through the rows and rows of books as if he could easily pick one up and begin to read it]

[Honestly, he was just appraising the quality of the leather bindings as best he could; a well bound book could fetch a right nice price with the right fence.]

Benedick | Much Ado About Nothing

[personal profile] theprincesjester 2018-05-07 11:02 am (UTC)(link)
[Truth be told? He'd much prefer wine to this... coffee he's been given, but he's been told it's too early for them to serve such things - which doesn't make sense. He supposes the coffee is not too bad, and it it a rather nice day.]

[All things considered, it could be much worse]

Ophelia | Hamlet

[personal profile] importuned 2018-05-07 12:54 pm (UTC)(link)
[There have, of late, been far too many words in Ophelia's life.

That, almost certainly, is why she wends her way out into the gardens rather than lingering over the rows of volumes long. The relief of fresh air and friendly green is much more of a comfort than the possibility of being lost in a world of fiction.

Reality is important. The flowers she kneels to examine are important. The dirt which inevitably clings to her skirts is important--because it's a sure sign she's somewhere real.

[Benedick had opted to stretch his legs, never really being one for lingering too long in one place or for general idleness. He supposed it was because he spent much of his time on Pedro's campaigns, really, but it could also just be a habit personal to him with no real reason behind it.]

[He spots the person examining the flowers and wanders over.]

I never understood the joy of flowers. Tell me, are these grounds in possession of rare blooms?

[There had been a single volume in Henry's childhood home. There had been a number of books at the schoolhouse. Even now, hidden in this chest or that, there were a handful of ratty paperbacks aboard the Renown, passed between men slowly but constantly.

None of that could prepare a mind for a library, let alone a library on this scale.

The awe stuck in his chest is likely what prompts him to speak when he rounds a corner of shelves and finds himself not alone.
] --overwhelming, isn't it?

[personal profile] knowntohisfriends 2018-05-07 01:31 pm (UTC)(link)
[The Dodger had really not expected anyone to speak with him. In his own experience, in a place as grand as this, the only people likely to speak with him were the guards sent to chuck him out on his ear. So to have words spoken that appeared to be ... polite? He was cautious, though you'd never be able to tell]

[He grins wide, from ear to ear]

Ain't never been 'round this many books. Who got time ta read all these?
importuned: (make you feel beautiful)

[personal profile] importuned 2018-05-07 01:56 pm (UTC)(link)
[Unfamiliar faces had always been commonplace enough at Elsinore. Being approached pulls no clouds over Ophelia's soft smile, although it does prompt her to return to her feet, pausing only to brush lightly at the dirt speckling where her knees had rested on the ground.]

Rare to me, if nothing else. [More dirt has to be brushed from her fingers before she points toward a small cluster of yellow and purple orchids.] Those lady slippers I've only heard of, never seen--but I hear they grow quite abundantly in England.

Men who haven't got to work for their keep, I'd expect.

[Besides, men who had no need to work seemed to have gone to all their years of school, which must be a help toward consuming something close to this many pieces of literature.

One hand lifts with obvious hesitance to tap against the spine of a particularly thick volume.
] D'you think people manage all this in one sitting?
knowntohisfriends: (amused)

[personal profile] knowntohisfriends 2018-05-07 02:17 pm (UTC)(link)
[There's a snort of agreement accompanied by a tilt of his head at the words of who would actually have time. The Dodger rolled his eyes a bit, still smiiling.]

Alright for those blokes who ain't known work.

[He glances over at the thickness, and scoffs]

No way. No one got the patience!
theprincesjester: (long coat)

[personal profile] theprincesjester 2018-05-07 02:24 pm (UTC)(link)
[He looks down at the flowers and he supposes they're nice enough, though he pauses at her words, looking over with a frown.]

Are we in England? I have to admit, I am not ... actually sure where this library is.

[And yet...]

And yet, I do not feel... ill at ease here.
wellenough: (you who are on the road)

[personal profile] wellenough 2018-05-07 03:06 pm (UTC)(link)
[Chatting, even with a stranger, is infinitely better than wandering on his own. It isn't quite like being amidst a gaggle of midshipmen and ship's boys, but it's closer--and that's enough to get Henry grinning properly as well.]

Would you carry this around with you? To keep reading?
knowntohisfriends: (Default)

[personal profile] knowntohisfriends 2018-05-07 03:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Somethin' that size? Bugger off, got better things to be carrin' wiv me than the likes of that.

[Though he probably could get a decent price for it with the fence he knew. Not Fagin, he never did books, but an associate of his. They were good with books. Still... the size of the thing made the risk not worth the reward. It was too thick to conceal properly, and too thick to be unnoticed if gone missing. He hadn't gained the moniker of Artful without being smart about his line of work.]
importuned: (was always there to help)

[personal profile] importuned 2018-05-07 03:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I should not bank on England, my lord. [Turning to glance over the garden again pulls the title thoughtlessly to her lips.] There were a number of patches of lantana here, and they are far from partial to British winters.

[Nor Danish winters, although Ophelia cannot for the life of her begin to feel overly concerned at the moment.]
theprincesjester: (full side shot water)

[personal profile] theprincesjester 2018-05-07 03:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I cannot say I know enough of flowers to recognize lantana even though they have been pointed out to me.

[He does look around at the gardens, noting the wide variety of colour in the plant life]

The groundskeeper here does their job well. It is ... appropriate to a library, to have such well maintained grounds to enjoy your reading in.
wellenough: (is just a goodbye)

[personal profile] wellenough 2018-05-07 06:44 pm (UTC)(link)
D'you think that means you need to buy a library before you can buy a book like this?

[It seems more respectful than using a book this size to, say, hold up a table.

It just looks like it probably could do a good job of it.

Eponine Thenardier | Les Miserables

[personal profile] lutin 2018-05-07 06:44 pm (UTC)(link)
[It's not the first time Eponine has seen books, obviously. Her mother had had books, cheap romances and the like, when times were better. Her father had had a big book in which he had scrawled the bills and takings of the inn. And Marius, of course, had books. But never had she seen so many, and such grand ones, all in one place.

Eponine wanders through the library, not really reading, but trailing her hands over the leather spines of the books. Part of her mind wonders whether they're valuable, worth stealing - how to steal them. Part of her wonders if she dares to slip one from the shelf to read herself.

It takes a while for her to settle enough to take one: it's a slim volume, bound in a pretty red leather. She traces the stamped gold lettering with her fingers, and slipping into a low chair close to a roaring fire, she begins to sound out the words.]

Luna Lovegood l Harry Potter

[personal profile] radishearring 2018-05-07 06:44 pm (UTC)(link)
[Luna for the moment is quite happily trying to track down the mystery sound that lead her into the library (and escaping the manor) in the first place. Thankfully her ponytail, wand, radishes in her ears and a scarred hand from the manor are usually spotted before she is.]

Curious, but at least its not where I was.

[The final comment has Ophelia's gaze flicking up from the grounds to study the building of the library.]

It does not distract from the work at hand?

[Did Wittenberg have gardens like this?]
knowntohisfriends: (definitely done)

[personal profile] knowntohisfriends 2018-05-07 06:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah. Means you got to be able to pay others to carry yer stuff for you.

[There's a laugh accompanying it. That being said, he's pretty sure he's seen people employed with the sole purpose of carrying stuff around]

[personal profile] knowntohisfriends 2018-05-07 06:59 pm (UTC)(link)
'Ere, I reckon we could make good scratch wiv this lot.

[Having done a thorough inspection of one of the rows, the Dodger had taken to wandering around and looking at people. This girl happened to have been the first he saw that looked like the type of person he knew - salt of the earth sort. Yeah, right. Criminals, an' scum, and you knew where you stood with that.]

If there were work at hand I might agree, but I am here at my leisure. I'm not really one to comment on the landscape of a place but... I have to admit to a well kept ground when I see it.

[Seriously, it is really nice here. It's the type of place you'd want for having free time in. Almost as though some cunning author had created it solely for their use]

Abraham Lincoln | Vampire Hunter/The Last American Vampire

[personal profile] honest_axe 2018-05-07 07:14 pm (UTC)(link)
["Prose" or [Action] is fine. Will match!]

Being in a place like this was strange, for one. It wasn't exactly like he had seen anything like it before. To be considered a story from a book felt strange as well, as after all he thought he was real. Though the idea that all reality was a story was strange anyhow. Wouldn't this place be a story as well then? Curious.

Abe wandered, mostly looking for someone he knew, but also just exploring to see where the trick in all this was. Was it a Vampire thing? Would this end in a vampire pulling the strings kind of thing? He didn't like it. He liked it even less that he had no weapons on him. All he had was his ray ban sun glasses and his wits about him.

The man didn't look like the old pictures of the President though. No, he had more of an appearance of his younger self. So much given to him to bring him back to life that his vampire form was much younger looking, which helped in some cases.

You can find him wandering around, either thought the gardens or through or checking out the edge of the woods, or much later, when he's stopped wandering, trying to sit outside a cafe and people watch, eating nothing at all. He had some concerns, that was for sure.

So intrigued! [This coming from the girl ankle deep in what she's found in a supply closet.] Granted anything is better than being on the run and the island. [Her subtle wa of trying to explain Olaf. But there's worry since she's without Klaus, Sunny and Beatrice.]

"Were you knocked on the head?" Eponine spits back. Her eyes dart around; she barely takes in the boy before her in her anxious checks to make sure he has not been overheard.

"Do you not use different words? Anyone might hear you!" She raises the book to her eyes, and speaks now in a furtive whisper. "And how should you take a whole room of books?"
knowntohisfriends: (cheek)

[personal profile] knowntohisfriends 2018-05-07 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
[Was he knocked on the head? Well... yes, frequently. Sikes' would cuff any of the lads round the head if he thought they were cheeking him and the Dodger had never been slow to run his mouth if it suited him. He doubts that's what she means though, and he rolls his eyes]

Don't be touched, ain't gonna take 'em all. Just a few. Good ones.
